Personal learning over an initial four-week period, one session following by a week of self-practice.
Use of ratios to produce a realistic image, width to height.
Idea of class is to start a drawing with the best chance of success - no different to learning to drive or establishing a good golf swing.
To me it is 80% of the finished sketch or painting.
Pablo's art principles
Image viewed and drawing size to have same ratio width to height.
Decide on composition to suit above ratio – e.g. 1:1.41 to suit A3, A4, A5 etc.
Find centre point of drawing to aid proportions within composition.
Draw sketch to aid final drawing.
Now ready to complete drawing i.e. shading etc. or prepare for painting.
Composition, perspectives and vanishing points
The scene (left) is not a good example of how to compose a realistic sketch - buildings never 'lean', explained and shown at meeting.
Without correct perspectives the final drawing will be beaten before it has started – all explained during class.
The understanding of vanishing points will relieve the artist of uncertainty within a composition - eliminating guesswork. Always sounds intimidating but is very basic once grasped.
